Hardface Welding & Repair

HTS Coatings specializes in a variety of welding processes; most of which pertain to hardfacing. Hardface welding is a type of welding process used to create metallurgically bonded metal coatings. Hardfacing requires in depth experience and knowledge to select the materials and processes that provide the quality repair or protection solution. Hardface welding protects against corrosion, abrasion and thermal shock. Each type of hardface welding has benefits and applications depending upon the component's production environment. Welding is also used at HTS Coatings during the thermal spray repair process to mend components or fill in eroded sections of a surface before thermal spray application as seen in the print roll repair below.

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding

TIG welding, also known as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), is an arc welding process that uses non-consumable tungsten electrodes to produce a weld. HTS Coatings uses this type of welding for hardfacing alloys such has Stellite® or Colmonoy. It can also be used to weld 316 Stainless Steel to stainless steel components.

Typical Uses:

  • Sleeves
  • Bushings
  • Augers and Screws
  • Print Cylinders

Typical Metals:

  • Stellite® 6
  • Colmonoy
  • 316 SS
  • Carbon Steel
  • Other Wire Materials

Metal Inert Gas (MIG) Welding

MIG Welding, sometimes referred to as gas metal arc welding (GMAW), is a welding process in which an electric arc forms between a consumable MIG wire electrode and the workpiece metal. This intense heat causes the two to melt and join. HTS Coatings uses MIG welding and flux core welding to build up heavy wear sections of steel or stainless steel.

Typical Uses

  • Drill Mandrel Repair
  • Crack Repair
  • Erosion Repair

Typical Metals:

  • Steel
  • Stainless Steel

Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA Welding)

A type of hardface welding that uses powder metal alloys to make a surface harder or tougher. HTS Coatings uses PTA welding to apply wear resistant, metallurgically bonded coatings to new parts to increase their wear resistance and to worn-down parts to repair and overhaul them. PTA welding is an environmentally friendly alternative to laser cladding.

Typical Uses:

  • Direct Impact Cutting Tool Restoration
  • Valve Stem & Seat Repair
  • Mud Motor Repair
  • Pump Component Repair

Typical Metals:

  • Tungsten Carbide
  • Cobalt based alloys (Stellite® 6)
  • Stainless materials

Brazing

Brazing is a metal-joining technique that joins components together by heating up the substrate and flowing a filler material into the joint. Brazing differs from welding since it does not involve melting the workpieces. Brazing can be used to join two pieces made of different metals or to join metals that do not weld easily. Filler metals can be customized for the joint type or component application. Self-fluxing alloys can be used. HTS Coatings typically uses brazing on cast iron components, since traditional welding is not possible, to correct broken or eroded sections.

Typical Uses:

  • Pump Housings
  • Gear Housings
  • Glass Work Deflectors

Typical Metals:

  • Brass
  • Bronze
